Aimhigher Greater Manchester Higher Education Progression Framework

The Higher Education Funding Council for England (HEFCE) are funding Aimhigher for a further three years. They have issued specific requirements for this new phase of Aimhigher activities.  These requirements are:

• learner targeting with the designation of a defined target cohort of learners in year groups 10, 11, 12 and 13. These learners are selected according to a range of indicators including, potential to succeed in higher education (H.E.).   indices of deprivation, social class and absence of family history of progression into higher education. The learners in the cohort will be tracked to evidence participation and impact of the activities undertaken;

• the inclusion of the target group of learners in a set of HE activities which have been collectively termed ‘The Aimhigher Progression Framework.  These activities include: 
campus visits
curriculum enrichment or masterclasses
student ambassadors
student mentors
summer schools

Developing the strategy and operational plans for delivery of  the Learner Progression Framework has been a high priority for Aimhigher Greater Manchester. An HEI Partnership Group has been initiated. It is attended by nominees from each of the seven local universities or higher education institutions (HEI’s) plus Aimhigher representatives from the local boroughs and staff from the Aimhigher Greater Manchester Coordination Unit. This group reports to the Area Partnership Committee (APC) and is supported by the Aimhigher HEI Partnership Project Manager.

AIMHIGHER GREATER MANCHESTER H.E.I. PARTNERSHIP GROUP  CONSTITUTION

Membership: 
Representativess from all 7 HEIs
No more than 4 additional HE representatives nominated by the group, to include at least one representative of HE in FE
2 Borough Coordinator representatives
Secretariat:  nominated by the group
Ex Officio:  Director, Project Manager for HEI programme

The HEI Partnership Group has a basic strategy of planning and delivering a programme of activities led by HE staff and students, that meets the needs of the Aimhigher target cohort in terms of:
• Increased motivation to learn;
• Improved attainment;
• improved awareness of H.E. opportunities;
•  increased familiarity with H.E. environments;
•  increased confidence  in terms of  applying for progression into higher education. 

HEI and Coordination Unit staff will work with partners in boroughs, schools and colleges to ensure that this strategy is successful.
